Parks Canada Taking Steps to Increase Recreational Access on Waskesiu Lake and Improve Ecological Integrity Prince Albert National Park, March
11, 2004 Based on feedback gathered in a public consultation
process held in 2003-2004 and in consultation with the Department
of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, PANP proposes to: Until the Newbury Riffle is built, the existing dam will operate in a manner that maintains sufficient downstream flow for fish and aquatic species, and helps maintain water levels in the lake should water levels rise. PANP will monitor water levels and continue to consult with Fisheries and Oceans Canada regarding operations of the existing dam. Recreational use of Waskesiu Lake and its neighbouring lakes is a primary concern for many individuals. Low water levels that impede boating access to Waskesiu Lake are not unique to this watershed. Due to recent weather patterns of low precipitation and high evaporation, lakes and sloughs throughout the prairie provinces are experiencing significantly lower water levels. It is unknown if or when precipitation levels will return Waskesiu Lake to levels prevalent in the mid-1970s.
