OPEN FIRE BAN /APPLICATION FOR FIRE PERMIT

Prince Albert National Park of Canada Box 100
Waskesiu Lake, Saskatchewan SOJ 2YO
April 2004

Dear Resident:

A number of concerns were raised over the increasing health and safety risks related to open fires in residential areas located in the Townsite of Waskesiu, Prince Albert National Park of Canada.

According to the National Parks Act and Regulations, no open fires are allowed except where approved by the Superintendent. The management team of Prince Albert National Park is taking steps towards ensuring the safety of our community by banning all open fires in the cabin area and, now, by addressing the remaining residential areas located in the Townsite boundaries. This includes all fixed roof staff accommodation areas, all cottage subdivisions as well as Elk Street trailer sites and the seasonal staff trailer park.

With direction and assistance from Labour Canada Fire Protection Services and our Fire Chief, we intend to implement a process whereby, with consideration to specific safety measures, residents of the townsite of Waskesiu may apply for permission granted from the Superintendent to have open fires in an approved container to be used an approved location. Upon a review of an application for a fire permit, notice of acceptance or denial of the request will be forwarded to the applicant in a timely manner. The responsibility for applying for an open fire permit on your property is your responsibility. Any person or persons attempting to kindle, renew or maintain any fire or allow any fire to burn in the open without express written permission from the Superintendent, will be charged under the National Parks Act.

Once finalized, a copy of the directives pertaining to approval mechanisms/process will be available at the administration building. We will keep you all posted.

Sincerely,

Rod Blair
Superintendent
Prince Albert National Park of Canada
