Cottage Season
The 2004 cottage season runs from April 1 through October 31. Weather will dictate when water lines will be opened. Our utilities crew will work hard to ensure lines are open as soon as possible.

Leaves/brush disposal
Cottage owners whose lots adjoin Highway 263 on Prospect Point should be aware that leaves/brush should no longer be piled along Highway 263 for pick-up by Parks Canada staff. Leaves and brush should be piled along Prospect Road instead to increase safety of those picking up the leaves/brush as well as those driving on Highway 263.

Construction Waste Disposal
Cottage owners are reminded that it is their responsibility to dispose of construction waste at an approved landfill. Large piles of construction waste or other material placed in front of dumpsters is unsightly and dangerous.

Boat/Trailer Parking
Cottage owners are reminded that boats and trailers are to be stored in an approved location (your cottage lot or at storage facilities provided by the marina) and not on public streets or public easements. Boats and trailers stored on public streets and easements impede sight lines and cause congestion; they are a public safety hazard.

Water Service Shut-off times
As many of you are probably aware, there have been significant difficulties with water lines freezing and breaking. This year, depending on the weather, water service may be shut off as early as the end of September. Should that take place, washroom/shower facilities will be available at the main beach house(s).

Law Enforcement
The RCMP and Prince Albert National Park share the responsibility for law enforcement within the park.

Contact the RCMP at 663-4400 for all law enforcement matters involving public peace: alcohol-related offences, highway traffic offences, theft and vandalism.

Contact Park Wardens at 663-4532 for all matters involving protection of the park's natural resources (wildlife, fisheries, vegetation, wildfire, food/ garbage left unattended). Park Wardens are also the first contact for missing or overdue persons.

Call 911
in an emergency.

Park User Fees
Some Parks Canada Agency fees are currently under review and may be revised during the 2004 operating season. Entry and camping fees will not change during the 2004 season.

Fire Pits
As enjoyable as it is to sit around a campfire, the close proximity of cottages and other buildings and the dry conditions we are currently experiencing contribute to the risk of a major structural fire occurring in the Waskesiu Townsite. As per the Superintendent's directive regarding fire receptacles/open fires in the Waskesiu Townsite, all fire pits within Waskesiu require a valid Fire Permit. Any person or persons attempting to kindle, renew or maintain any fire to burn in the open without a Fire Permit will be charged under the National Parks Act. Please see attached Superintendent's Directive for more information.

Spruce Budworm Spraying

Based on positive results of spruce budworm spraying in 2003, spraying will be conducted in spring of 2004. This is the second year of a twoyear program. More details will be made available later this spring. A copy of the results of the 2003 aerial spray program is available at the administration building.

Dogs/Pets
If you reside in the park for longer than 30 days per year, you must purchase a permit from the administration office for your pet. For the comfort and safety of the general public and protection of wildlife, your pet must be under physical control at all times and on a leash less than 3 metres in length. We invite you to enjoy the park's dog friendly beaches:
west of the hreakwater and south to Murphy's bay (Kingfisher Trail) and between Orchis Street (in front of subdivision 3) and Beaver Glen Beach.

Garbage and Recycling
There is a composting bin at the recycling depot located in the parking lot next to the post office. This bin is for vegetable waste including egg shells and coffee grounds. This bin is not intended for animal parts or by-products or dairy products. Plastic will not decompose in the bin either, so please do not throw bags or pails in with your compost. This bin is emptied at the park staging area and mixed with other organic material to form a rich brown soil which is available to the public. Please call 663-4549 for information on getting your compost.

Cooking Grease, Soaps, Hazardous Material
Cooking grease may clog sewer lines and pumps. Please do not dispose of cooking grease through the sanitary sewer system. Cooking grease should be disposed of in garbage containers. Large volumes can be disposed of at the park compound.
There will be a hazardous material drop off at the park compound on May23/24 and September 5/6, please watch for reminders. Hazardous materials may also be taken to approved hazardous waste disposal sites. The landfill on Highway #2 is not approved for hazardous materials.
The landfill on Highway #2 is now gated and locked. The landfill will be open to the public on Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. For more information contact the R.M. of Lakeland at (306) 982-2010.

Managing Wildlife in Waskesiu
Bears are drawn to food and garbage. Bears that become habituated to humans and their garbage are more often than not destroyed through no fault of their own. Please:
pick up garbage and dispose of it properly do not leave food unattended outside. Proper food and garbage storage greatly reduces human/bear conflicts. Contact the Resource Conservation Section at 663-4532 to report any bear conflicts.

Elk
have become habituated in Waskesiu. To increase public safety and reduce the probability of human/elk conflict, the park is conducting a public awareness program and aversive conditioning of elk. You will receive more information about this program in the spring. Remember that all wildlife can be dangerous and should be respected. Give elk the space they need by staying at least 30 metres away. Females are most aggressive during May/June calving season and males are especially dangerous during the September/October rut. Please be careful in areas frequented by elk and keep an eye out for specific areas posted with caution signs.

Recreational Access to Waskesiu Lake
Modifications to the main marina boat launches are underway. New launch lanes will be added this spring to enabe recreational access when water levels fluctuate. In addition, the ecological integrity of Waskesiu lake will be improved later this year. The Waskesiu River dam will be decommissioned and a fixed crest structure (a Newbury Rifle) will be created. The rifle will allow for appropriate water flow and fish passage.

Overnight Moorage
Overnight mooring of watercraft is prohibited everywhere in PANP except at marinas and backcountry campgrounds (when camping). Several issues are associated with unauthorized mooring including increased soil compaction and vegetation damage leading to shoreline erosion; navigational hazards and increased damage to lake bottom features and adverse shoreline and lake view aesthetics.

Posters in the Park
Notices should be placed on approved bulletin boards provided throughout the park and not on garbage cans or recycling bins.
