Location

Waskesiu is located in Canada's National Park of Prince Albert just 90 km north of the city of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada. It's near the geographic centre of the province. The park was created by an Order in Council and offically opened in August 10th and 11th, 1927 by Mackenzie King and representatives of the Federal and Provincial Governments.

Park Fees

Prince Albert National Park of Canada raised fees on services provided in 2003. Revenue generated from these fee increases are reinvested back into the park. Parks Canada proposed a number of fee increases in 2004. These proposed increases may be tabled in Parliament in the fall of 2004. The Prince Albert National Park is an ideal destination for travellers in the summer and winter. Summer activities can include hiking, canoeing, and visits to our interpretive centre. The park offers summer programs and educational field trips for children as well as guides and information services for adults. Winter time at the park brings snowshoeing, skiing, and other activities in the pristine setting of Saskatchewan's most famous park.

Geography

3875 square kilometre park on the southern edge of Canada’s great boreal forest, it is a transition zone featuring diverse plant and animal life and a landscape dominated by the effects of glaciation..the combination of prairie, deciduous forest and boreal forest forms a distinctive Canadian habitat, unique the world over.

Wildlife

Prince Albert’s many lakes, streams and marshlands support abundant wildlife and are recognized as being one of the few places left in the world where timber wolves live undisturbed. The park protects badgers, coyotes, black bears, otters, elk, white-tailed deer, moose, loons, hare, foxes, lynx, caribou, osprey and eagles. There are 195 species of birds including the second largest breeding colony in Canada of the rare white pelican. Double-crested cormorants, Canada geese, the great blue heron, hawks, owls, and a high density of breeding dabbling ducks, particularly mallards, shovellers and pintails, inhabit the park.

Major Access Roads

The park is accessible by Highways #2 and #264 or Scenic Route - Highway #263, all of which are paved, year-round roads. Contact the park office if you require information regarding routes to backcountry trailheads and canoe launching points on the western or northern boundaries.

Airport

Prince Albert airport is t is located 5km east of the city at an elevation of 427 m. Norcanair provides service from Prince Albert to Saskatoon, La Ronge, Stony Rapids, Fond-du-lac, and Uranium City. Transwest Air provides service from Prince Albert to Regina, Saskatoon, La Ronge, Stony Rapids, Fond-du-lac, Uranium City, Points North, and Wallaston.

Peak Season

The area's peak season begins in May and continues until September, when accommodation reservations are necessary. The value season is late September through April.

A wide variety of accommodations are available, from campgrounds to luxury resort hotels. Rentals of individual cabins and condo-style hotel rooms are popular with tourists. Meeting space and facilities are available for groups at hotels and other locations around the community.

The park offers a wide variety of summer interpretive programs for children and adults including guided hikes, theatre events and other educational programs. Tennis lessons and use of tennis courts, lawn bowling, basketball court, and much more available from the Chamber of Commerce.

Winter time at the park brings snowshoeing, skiing, and other activities in the pristine setting of Saskatchewan's most famous park.

Amenities

Waskesiu offers a wide variety of tourist services including police services provided by the RCMP, a post office, liquor board store, gas station, hair salon, laundromat, library, bus depot, marina, boat launching, movie theatre, convention facilities, grocery and bakery stores, souvenir & gift shops, restaurants, clothing stores and movie rentals.

Golf

Known as Saskatchewan's "Golf Meca," Waskesiu was home to the famous Lobstick designed by the legendary Stanley Thompson and built in the 1930's, it incorporates all of the classic Thompson trademarks, the foremost of which is the use of the natural landscape. The rolling fairways and greens will test your skills well beyond the slope rating of 126.

Next on the list is the Elk Ridge Golf resort. With Waskesiu and Elk Ridge a stone throws outside the parks gate , is it any wonder that this is Saskatchewan's premiere golf destination. Nature is our partner and your hostess at the Elk Ridge Golf Resort. Cut through the boreal forest, natural water hazards on nine holes add and extra challenge and our new silica sand bunkers make playing even more exciting Professional and recreational golfers alike will be challenged by our unique and breathtaking fairways nestled in the tranquil lush boreal forest. The golf season at both Waskesiu and ElkRidge runs from May through September.

There are eight beaches and an island on Waskesiu Lake to explore:

Main Beach- large swimming area
Ski Beach- great day use beach
Beaverglen Beach- a short walk from the campground
Point View- located just past the Waskesiu Marina
Birch Bay- sheltered kitchens and large swimming area
South Bay- on Narrows Road
Trippes Beach- on Narrows Road
Paignton Beach- A peninsula Beach on the Narrows Road, sheltered kitchens
King's Island- excellent day use island

Namekus Lake, Sandy Lake, Trappers Lake, Kingsmere Lake and Crean Lake also offer a wide variety of beaches and recreation opportunities.

Tennis Lessons- this is the 9th season of lessons, Certified Instructor, weekly junior lessons are available in July and August, private lessons can be requested for all ages, visit the Chamber Office for more details.
