Prince Albert National Park was established
by order-in-council on March 24, 1927. It was officially opened
on August 10, 1928 by
Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King along with other
federal and provincial government officials were on hand to mark
the occasion.
More than 3000 people attended the
opening ceremonies at the Waskesiu main beach on what turned out
to be a beautiful summer day. Prime Minister King in his remarks
noted that: "In the building of Canadian national life and
in the moulding of our national character, it is of the utmost importance
that we should cultivate an appreciation of all that is beautiful
in our physical environment."
During the economic depression of
the 1930s and the Second World War, Relief Camps and Alternate Service
Work Camps operated in the park. Many of the park's historic facilities
and roads/trails were completed by these workers during this time.
The book Saskatchewan's Playground
- A History of Prince Albert National Park by Dr. Bill Waiser, provides
fascinating details about the park's establishment, development
and management
Waskesiu Memories compiled by Dorell
Taylor reached its 3rd volume in the summer of 2003. The original
volume was dedicated to the People of Waskesiu on the occasion of
the 70th Anniversary of the Opening Ceremonies of Prince Albert
National Park in August 1928. This labour of love resulted in over
a thousand hours dedicated to compiling over 650 pages of individual
stories about Waskesiu by the time the 3rd volume was released for
the Parks 75th Anniversary. Unbelievable! The stories are truly
amazing and will forever preserve the histories and reminiscences
of Waskesiu. Both Dr. Bill Waiser's and Dorell Taylor's "labour
of love" are available through Friends
of Prince Albert National Park.
