UPDATE ON FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
FOR SPRAY PROGRAM
Parks Canada approval
for BtK aerial spraying will proceed to the second year
in 2004. BtK is now part of the Park's vegetation management
plan and is having significant results in controlling
the defoliation created by the spruce budworm .
The spraying plan which
began this June is for a three-year program with two
applications each year.
The total cost of the
three-year program is projected at between $150,000
and $180,000. Parks Canada will pay one-third of the
cost, leaving between $100,000 and $120,000 to be financed
by the community.
The Lobstick Golf Course
has agreed to finance one-third of the community cost,
leaving between $67,000 and $80,000 to be financed by
donations. Parks Canada legislation does not permit
a levy or tax.
To date just under
$50,000 has been collected and deposited into the WASKESIU
TOWNSITE ENHANCEMENT SOCIETY INC. or WTESI.
There has been strong support from all sectors: cabins,
cottages and businesses.
The committee headed
by Brian Matheson is hoping to organizing a drop off
in cottage and cabin areas to remind those those that
have not yet contributed to do so . We encourage all
to join their neighbors and friends in this effort.
How
to make a contribution
The Waskesiu Community
Council has established a fund raising committee, headed
by Bryan Matheson. This Committee is supported by all
major organizations in the community, including the
Cabin and Cottage Owners, Save Our Spruce, Chamber of
Commerce and the Waskesiu Golf Course.
The key elements
of the plan are as follows:
The Waskesiu Community
Council and the SOS Leadership group worked extremely
hard over the winter to get this project approved. The
rest is in your hands.
