Waskesiu Community Delivers

SOS Coordinator Herve Langlois presented a cheque in the amount of $26,667 to Don Ravis, chair, Waskesiu Community Council on Friday, April 4th.

This financial contribution fulfils the financial commitment made to partially fund the environmental assessment for the Spruce Budworm spray program. Parks Canada will fund the balance of the EA costs.

Several Waskesiu community organizations demonstrated their strong support for the project by making major donations to the cause. They included: Lobstick Golf Course Inc.; Waskesiu Cottage Owners' Association; and Waskesiu Cabin Owners' Association.

In addition, SOS received numerous donations from individuals and businesses in support of the program to save the white spruce in the community.

"This project is obviously very important to Park visitors and the Waskesiu community as demonstrated by the significant financial contributions made," said Langlois.

Open houses are being held on April 7th and 8th to give the public an opportunity to comment on the EA report. The report concluded that the BtK spray program to control the budworm infestation can proceed with minimal residual effects, and no cumulative effects on the environment. This independent assessment represents a major step forward in the fight to Save Our Spruce.

Upon completion of this review process, Parks Canada will make the final decision on the BtK spray program. Assuming a positive decision, the program will be implemented in late May or early June, 2003.

The SOS leadership group - Dave King, Manley McLachlan, Wayne Simpson and Herve Langlois - wish to express our deep appreciation to all who have supported this project to date. "We are only part way there - but our progress has been most encouraging and satisfying, said Langlois.
